The client’s legacy software was outdated, with a clunky user interface that made it difficult for operators to perform tasks efficiently. The system needed a modern UX overhaul while remaining accessible to diverse users in industrial settings.
We migrated the platform to a new scalable backend technology and framework, revamping the UX and visual design. The new design focused on improving navigation, accessibility for operators wearing gloves, and usability in low-visibility environments.
Operators of industrial injection molding equipment faced daily frustrations with the system's monotonous navigation patterns and cumbersome data input methods. Their primary goal was to minimize machine downtime, but the outdated design was holding them back. This project aimed to make it easier for users to find what they are looking for.
Mastering specialized workflows, such as preheating the machine, can be time-consuming for operators. We concentrated on identifying the most common tasks to reduce training time and developed a user-friendly quick assistant that alleviates cognitive load. This approach helps operators to navigate standard procedures more easily, guiding them directly to the next step without needing to remember complicated instructions or interpret a crowded interface.
Feedback from operators highlighted the desire for a more recognizable interface, so I took inspiration from popular mobile applications. I leveraged familiar patterns that help users quickly identify common controls, ultimately making navigation faster and reducing errors during operation. This simplified much of the complexity of the legacy visual design patterns, reducing the size of our component library from over 600 unique assets to 160.
This interface is used in over a dozen languages, from English to Arabic. We carefully chose a condensed font that is readable and scalable to any text string size.
The redesigned interface resulted in noticeable improvements in operator efficiency, significantly reducing task completion times. Both stakeholders and operators expressed increased satisfaction, highlighting the ease of use and polished design as key strengths. Impressed by the impact, the client extended our timeline to allow for enhancements such as user testing and design QA to further refine the overall user experience.
